Frequently
Asked Questions
Have questions? Don't worry, we have your answers. Many
members of Theta Tau were confused about Fraternities and Greeks when
they first arrived on campus. Hopefully, our FAQ section can help
clear up any misconception. If you would like any additional info,
please feel free to contact us.
What is Theta Tau?
We are a Professional Engineering Fraternity, which means we accept into
membership students pursuing degrees in engineering and some related
fields. As a fraternal organization, we act as Brothers more than as
members; helping each other and making a home for one another.
What is a Greek? What is a
Greek Organization?
Greek organizations are simply fraternities or sororities. They
are called "Greek" because the Greek alphabet is often used to name such
organizations. A "Greek" is someone that is a member of a
fraternity or sorority.
What is Rush?
Rush is
the time during the school year when fraternities and sororities become
acquainted with students that might wish to join. This time period is
also useful to students, allowing them to look at all of their options.
At SDSM&T, Rush is during the entire fall semester.
Many schools conduct Rush twice a year, and Rush only lasts for a
limited amount of time such as a week or two. The staff and students of
Mines have wisely chosen to use the entire fall semester as Rush. This
way, we can get to know those prospective members that wish to join the
House well enough to decide if we wish to invite them to join.
Additionally, this allows students to get to know the members of a
fraternity better so they can decide which fraternity to join if they
receive an invitation to do so.
How do I join Theta Tau?
The Brothers of our Fraternity spend the Rush period trying to
get to know prospective members. At regular meetings, we vote on new
members. Any student must receive a unanimous vote by the members to be
invited to join. At the end of the fall semester, invitations (or
"bids") are handed out to students.
How do you get a bid? The best way to approach Rush is to check out
all of the fraternities, and get to know the members of each. This can
be easily done at events held by Theta Tau, although you are welcome to
stop by anytime!
Upon receiving a unanimous vote, a student will receive a bid at the
end of the fall semester. That student may then choose to pledge to the
fraternity. During 2 - 3 months in the Spring semester, students are
involved in activities at the Greek House they have pledged. |
